Front
& Back of a 1955 "Unofficial" Kentucky Derby
Glass
I
don't often write much about horse racing glasses. One of
the reasons is that there are a number of other publications
and web sites devoted to only horse racing glasses, and
a number of people who are much more qualified. The best
reference site on the web for the past few years for any
horse racing glasses is Tom Sporney's and Cindy Pierson's
Equicollector at http://members.xoom.com/equillector/.
This site not only covers all the Triple Crown horse racing
glasses but harness races, other state races, along with
related horse racing memorabilia. Information is well organized
and a price range for each item is provided. They have been
compiling auction results of horse racing glass sales for
the past several years. Using this database of prices, they
provide a low, high, and a target range for each glass price.
The glass shown above is an
"Unofficial" Kentucky Derby glass. It is not the
official glass issued by the track. A number of bars or
other companies have been issuing their own glasses to commemorate
Derby Day too. This glass is from The Turf Bar & Restaurant,
Dayton, Ohio and dates to 1955. It is one of the earliest
Unofficial glasses known. It was lot #192 in CGN Auction
# 54 and brought $31.00.
