Patterson's humorous cartoons can be found on a variety of objects
- calendars, placemats, towels, posters, mugs, etc. There are
also a number of glasses that feature his work too. A set of
four glasses distributed by Arby's in 1982 display the cartoons:
Luck Out (tennis), Dedications (golf), First Flake (skiing),
and Pool Shark (pool).
A few years earlier, Pepsi promoted a set of ten different cartoons
on glasses. These include: Birdie (golf), Leader of the P
ack (cycling), Panic
(tennis), Line Drive (baseball), Nice Try (racquetba
ll), Psyche
Out (skiing), The Split (bowling), Heads Up (soccer), Sportsmanship(tennis),
and Backlash (fishing). There
were however two additional versions that were never put into
distribution. They were: It's Only a Game (golf) and Winner
Takes All (tennis). So the original intention was to produce
a set of twelve glasses, but the promotion was pared back to
ten. In addition, six of these glasses were issued in a special
package at the Food Service Las Vegas Convention in 1980. The
glasses are Marked "1980 Las Vegas" above the Pepsi
logo and bring a premium (See Auction #52 lot #7).
If you are interested in Gary
Patterson glassware, Mike Kelly wrote an extensive article in
CGN issue #35 on his work and documented most all the
glasses and mugs that have been produced. That
work has recently been placed online.
