Wacky
Packages Glasses
from Topps
I remember in the early 1970's going to the newsstand
and buying trading cards. I usually always bought baseball cards.
But baseball wasn't always in season and sometimes they would
run out of the current baseball series, so I'd buy something
else. One of the other packs I might get would be Wacky Package
Stickers from Topps. These were card sized stickers that satirized
a popular product. They provided all the irreverent types of
jokes that every young teen loves. We used them to cover our
notebooks and our lockers at school.
What I never realized until recently was that
there are glasses with these same images. I regret to admit
that I know little about the history of their distribution.
Given the scarcity of these items, I would be safe in assuming
they were a mail order item or a brief department store issue.
The shape of the glass positively dates them to the mid-1970's.
If anyone else has additional information on their distribution,
I'd like to hear from them. These glasses seem to be in more
demand by card or Topps collectors then they are by glass collectors. This
particular Hawaiian Punks glass is in the current CGN
auction (lot # 3).
